Åke Johansson Trio – Born to Be Blue (Dragon Records, 1986)
Born to Be Blue was recorded in July 1985 at Swedish Radio’s Studio 12 in Gothenburg and released in 1986 on Dragon Records. It captures the Åke Johansson Trio at their peak, blending the bebop tradition with a lyrical, distinctly Swedish voice.
Context & Swedish Jazz in the 1980s
The Swedish jazz scene in the 1980s was vibrant, with veteran musicians maintaining strong links to American jazz traditions. Åke Johansson, deeply rooted in bebop and hard bop, stood out as both a soloist and an accompanist. His trio had earned its reputation by performing with legends like Chet Baker and Toots Thielemans – including during Baker’s 1983–1985 Scandinavian tours.
The Trio
- Åke Johansson (piano): A bebop-influenced pianist from Borås, Åke was known for his melodic phrasing and command of jazz harmony. He played with many American icons touring Sweden, including Dexter Gordon and James Moody. His style mixed Bud Powell and Bill Evans with a Nordic lyricism.
- Kjell Jansson (bass): A Gothenburg-based bassist with a swinging, imaginative style. He had been a long-time collaborator with Johansson and formed a tight rhythmic bond within the trio.
- Rune Carlsson (drums): A veteran drummer who studied at Berklee and brought crisp, dynamic swing to the trio. Carlsson had played with countless Swedish jazz legends.
The Music
The album includes jazz standards like “Born to Be Blue” and “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was”, delivered with elegance and swing. Johansson’s original compositions such as “Ramnavägen 55”, “Kryckan”, and “Vals till Göran” reveal his melodic gifts and Scandinavian sensibility. The trio’s interplay is intuitive and warm throughout, grounded in decades of live collaboration.
Trivia & Legacy
The album was recorded at Sveriges Radio and released on Dragon Records, a label that has been instrumental in documenting Swedish jazz since the 1970s. Around the same time as this album, the trio was backing Chet Baker live in Sweden – recordings that later became part of Dragon’s acclaimed Chet Baker in Sweden releases.
Today, Born to Be Blue is appreciated as a hidden gem of Scandinavian jazz. It showcases not only Åke Johansson’s pianistic voice but also the strength of Sweden’s jazz tradition, as preserved and shared through labels like Dragon Records.
