About Dragon Records

Dragon Records was founded in Stockholm, 1975, by pianist/composer Jan Wallgren (1935-96) together with producer and music journalist Lars Westin.

Today Dragon Records is owned and managed by Lars Westin. Most Dragon releases feature contemporary Swedish jazz groups and soloists. There are also a number of LPs and CDs with historical recordings by Swedish musicians, most notably a series of eleven CDs with Lars Gullin, or with American jazz soloists recorded in Sweden, amongst which are Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Lee Konitz, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Dorham, Art Farmer and Dizzy Gillespie.

Dragon Records has recorded quite a few American jazz musicians visiting Sweden including Lee Konitz, Bob Brookmeyer, Chet Baker, Jim McNeely, Hal Galper, Bob Mintzer, Richie Beirach, Ron McClure, Adam Nussbaum, Red Mitchell, Roger Kellaway and Dave Liebman together with Swedes.

There are also CDs with Swedish musicians recorded in the US. (trumpeter Anders Bergcrantz and bassist Lars Danielsson) or historical material featuring clarinetist Stan Hasselgard.

Since 1982, Dragon Records has received 13 Golden Disc awards for best Swedish jazz album of the year. One of Dragon’s most successful albums is with the Miles Davis Quintet recorded in Stockholm on two occasions in 1960. On the four-CD Dragon album are the complete recordings, transferred from the original tapes.
